The hosting service where twc is “rooming” will be performing its scheduled quarterly server maintenance between 1:00am and 8:00am EST on Sunday, November 19, 2006. So, third world county may be unavailable at that time. Be patient and drop back by after you’ve done the responsible thing and gotten some sleep, ‘K? I’ll likely be in bed then, so even if you have one of my alternate email addresses, I’ll not see it until after 8:00am EST that day, anyway.
Just a lil FYI
In other houseblogkeeping “news”–
twc had an “outage” earlier today (Wednesday, November 15) likely caused by bad behavior by a WP plugin, urm, Bad Behavior. I say “likely caused” because twc was accessible again after I disabled the plugin. So it goes. Apparently it works well for some folks, but didn’t sit well with either twc in general or the hosting service where twc “lives”.
Oh. Well. A nice idea: kill spambot access before it even hits the blog. Just not at twc, for now.
Other Blogkeeping: any WordPress users upgraded to WP 2.05, yet? If so, feedback, please. From 2.04 to 2.05 doesn’t seem like such a biggie, but of anyone’s had some snags not noted at the WP Codex, I’d like a holler, OK?
Yeh, I don’t jump on ANY upgrade immediately, except for anti-virus/anti-spyware updates from proven reliable companies. Microsoft updates/upgrades, in particular, I view with a jaundiced eye. Autoupdate from MessySoft? I don’t think so. Our computers here all use either Bigfix or Shavlik Technologies NetChk Protect to effect updates of MS OS computers. Muuuch safer and more reliable, IMO, especially the Shavlik Tech product.
Oh, funny upgrade anecdote–a hardware upgrade incident. Upgrading the memory in an old 500mhz machine here recently. Switched out a 128MB stick for a 256 stick that is compatible (same company, same memory, etc.) with another 256MB stick in the same computer. Left a 128MB stick in slot 3. Should have “seen” 640MB, right? Nuh-uh. Saw the 128 as 64MB and the machine “ran” like molasses on a very, very cold winter’s day. Popped the 128MB stick out and… that puppy became a sizzler (well, as sizzling as a 500Mhz jalopy can be, I guess).
That third slot’s always been kinda picky, but this ate the cake.
Upgrades, even hardware upgrades, do NOT always go like “the book” says. In fact, one might be safe to say that they go as “the book” says just about as often as Murphy gets distracted and neglects to stick his oar in.
I haven’t upgraded yet either, more just from lack of time. Let me know if you hear of any issues, I’ll probably try to do it next week if not.
Some folks have had 500 errors and 302 (redirect) issues, but if ya have plenty of time and those (rare) problems come up, there are fixes posted.
