ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…

Another major, time-devouring project finished. Now that the pressure’s off, I can feel the Rack Monster coming for me, especially since, after weeks of “heat index warnings” today’s in the low 70s and overcast, with intermittent rain. Decided I wasn’t safe driving and have rescheduled my day to be within a few short steps of somewhere relatively comfortable to collapse into unconsciousness.

Maybe I’ve been bitten by a tsetse fly?

Green Brain

Interesting morning, Friday. One small incident led to another and another.

Driving down a back dirt road here in America’s Third World County. Heifer jumped out of a draw right in front of Ye Olde Saturn. I could see, on a little closer look, the fence break she’d come through was where the draw had undercut the fence. Meanwhile, she was wandering back and forth across the road. Now, I didn’t exactly want Ye Olde Saturn to be kicked or sprayed with projectile “fright feces,” so I took it slow, edging up to her, this way and that, using Ye Olde Saturn to chivvy her on toward the house up the road that was obviously a part of the property she’d wandered off from, then gently, slowly, herding her on and back toward the back lot, where she finally went and stood next to a fence where others of her ilk were standing next to a feeding spot.

So, it wasn’t as much fun as doing it from horseback, but it was at least some fun. When I approached the farm house, the owner opened the door and thanked me for being relatively gentle about herding her back, since as hot as it was it’d be easy to really “Het her up.”

Fun.

On down the road, I stopped and picked up a couple of hedgeapples–fruit of the Osage Orange trees left over from early settlers’ use of the tree in building a living fence, one that still effectively “fenced” the property on down the road better than the “devil’s wire” fence that had let Bossie run free.

(Oh, the pic? Not my hand. The hedgeapple does look like the ones I picked up, though.)

I think I’ll cultivate some to replace our chain link fence…

Oh, Lucky Day

…to have me live it. *heh*

So Friday the Thirteenth actually falls on a Friday this month. Enjoy it while you can.

Essential Requirement for Modern “Tech” Writers

To be a “tech” writer for websites nowadays, it seems a requirement that English orthography be disregarded. One example of many:

“From retail stores to residential homes LEDs hold the promise of better durability and a longer lasting light but more important they use less energy than a standard incandescent bulb.”

Two written syntax errors and one grammar error in one sentence. And the writer got paid for doing that. *sigh* I’ll not link the source, but this sentence is just one example of many in one short blurb that is much, much more literate than most.

A Timely Reminder

You just can’t fool Mother Nature or Father Time…

The Gods of the Copybook Headings

Rudyard Kipling

AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “Stick to the Devil you know.”

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “The Wages of Sin is Death.”

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “If you don’t work you die.”

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

The Watershed?

Bear with me a bit. It came to me, as in a dream, that this:

…may have been the beginning of the end of Western Civilization.

Just think about it.

Cattle, deer, etc., nurse for a while and then eat grass.

Lions nurse for a while and then eat cattle, deer, etc.

Our babies nurse for a while and then eat… baby food.

Eeewwwww! Cannibalism!

No Yardwork Today

103.0°F–2 hours after posting that, 104.4°F–at the local high school weather station. “Heat index” of 111 (110, 2 hours later, so less humidity? Yep).

Working inside today.

Unsolicited, Unpaid Endorsement

As regular readers may recall, back in March I injured my right knee’s ACL. It’s been a decent recovery so far, but I’ve continued to use a cane, in addition to two elastic bandages and one knee brace, to support myself when walking.

And it is support, not merely for stability and balance which is why I’ve been using the cane on my right side: to take weight off the knee when walking, in order to abate the pain, and use fewer pain meds.

But today, I bought a pair of these:

and for the first time in months I could walk without a cane, without pain. Yes, walk. Without pain. Full weight on the leg. Immediately. I simply set the cane aside and walked to give it a try (well, “set the cane aside”=”held the cane just in case” but there was an immediate difference). And yes, I had tried doing w/o the cane’s support earlier, and it was like stabbing my knee with an ice pick.

Of course, I’m still wearing the elastic supports and knee brace for stability (balance is fine, TYVM), but walking. Without pain.

Wonderful.

I like these Skechers Shape Ups. Lots! Time will tell if the claims made by the manufacturer pan out for me, but the simple fact that I can walk, without the cane supporting a large part of my weight, without pain is a BIG DEAL to me.

Good Stuff, Maynard.

The Purpose of the System…

“The purpose of the school system is to protect teachers regardless of competence. The purpose of government is to collect taxes and pay them to government workers. It may be that some teachers and some government workers do something useful, but that is not the purpose of the system. The Iron Law* prevails.” — Jerry Pournelle
