Smile! You’re On Candid Camera

You may have heard through some media source the comment that Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt made this past Wednesday, February 15, 2006. Mark the date. It’s only 22 years later than George Orwell predicted in his classic novel, “1984“. Hurtt has been quoted as saying that he wants surveillance cameras on downtown streets, apartment complexes and shopping malls. When asked whether the need for cameras extends to private homes, he said,

“If they’re putting a burden on the criminal justice system and cheating the other residents of Houston, yes.”

Also:

“If you’re not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?”

Well for one thing you ignorant Neanderthal it’s against everything this country was founded on. For another I might not remember there’s some freedom sucking voyeur watching my every move and do something as illegal as getting undressed and giving you or whoever’s supposed to be watching these things the thrill of their lives. When you or they die of a heart attack by being totally overcome with my beauty then I’d end up on Death Row. It would be my fault right?

You know I’ve heard some stupid things in my time, I do after all have three kids and a husband, but this has got to top the list. What in the world makes you think that any one has the right to take my privacy away in a home I’ve paid for with my own hard work and sweat? What makes you think TEXAS citizens would allow this? If you want to catch this girl doing something illegal you damn well better catch me out in public because if you try to come into MY house with a camera to watch me there’s gonna be some discussion.

Give Me A BREAK!

Climate change?

No. “Weather” is not equivalent to “climate.” But still… one sure thing about both is that they have always changed in the past and will continue to do so.

Take our local weather. I shoulda known. My Wonder Woman has a “long weekend”—Friday through Monday—off work, which we planned to spend mostly at home just “being there” with each others’ company, with a little out n about thrown in. Weather all week had been Spring-like. Thursday, the highs were in the mid-70s.

By Thursday night, 19. (Gee, I bet my lil pot of Anasazi beans I started are glad I didn’t put ’em out “Cos the weather’s so nice” eh? Yeh, anthropomorphizing. So?) And now, our first “real” snow of the season: 4″ on the ground.

Wether changes. Climates change. And there’s just about nothing we can do about it. For a pretty darned sensible take on Global Warming/Climate Shift Chicken Little-ism, see Glacial Thinking, Let’s Create A Crisis There are more scholarly, intellectual treatments of the topic (Go to Jerry Pournelle’s place and search on global warming and climate for a few), but Creechman over at Clear Lake Reflections pretty well sums up some of the fundamental flaws in GW/CC Chicken Littleism. Read it. (Yeh, Yeh, I know I’m not the boss of you. So?)

My Fav Bread Machine Bread

Here’s a change of pace. This bread recipe has been a hit at my house. I make it in my bread machine, but if you do the knead-rise-punchdown-etc. routine, I imagine it’d work as well for that, too.

Add these ingredients in this order to your bread machine, set it for a 2-pound loaf and the crust you want (I choose “darker” for mine, YMMV) and walk away.

  • 1.5 cups warm water (about 115 degrees fahrenheit)
  • 0.5-1.0 tsp salt (mostly a matter of taste)
  • 2 Tbs oil (I prefer a good, full-flavored olive oil for this)
  • 1 egg (added last immediately before the dry ingredients)

Mix the dry ingredients separately and add them all at once:

  • 2 cups white flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2.5 tsp active dry yeast
  • 0.25 C oat bran
  • 0.25 C garbanzo bean flour
  • 0.25 C vanilla protein powder (mostly soy)
  • 0.25 C corn meal
  • 0.25 C sunflower seeds

Hit the start button and let the feast begin!

This is a rather heavy bread, but it bakes up nicely and—most importantly—is delicious. That it is also packed with nutrients is a lil lagniappe.

Hie thee hence!

Scram, beat it, get outa heah…

And CLICK on over to Rick’s transcript of a very interesting “non-debate” on the issue of domestic surveillance of foreign contacts with American residents (citizen or not) at The Real Ugly American.

Very interesting. Executive summary? “If Al-qaeda’s calling you, we wanna know why… and we have the Constitutional authority to find out.”

But don’t trust my summary. See for yourself.

🙂

Veddy, veddy interesting… It’s a loooong post, but worth reading, IMO.

Mohammed in a Pink Dress

Recently, Mike Adams wrote an open missive to the National Endowment for the Arts and published it with the title, The Queer Muhammed: an experiment in tolerance. Here’s the leadoff:

I write to you today, not with a request, but with a demand. I’ve been sitting back patiently while the NEA has been promoting anti-Christian “art” for a number of years. In fact, one could say that I have been supporting it, too, given that my tax dollars have been spent on this garbage. And maybe I’ve been supporting it in another way by refusing to write you to express my frustration. That is, until now.

In the spirit of the “separation of church and state,” my demand is that you commission a painting–fully funded with tax dollars–that has one intention and one intention only: To offend Muslims everywhere.

In the spirit of the experiment Dr. Adams proposes, I humbly submit the following:

I’ll say this for the old Butcher of Medina: he’s got gams. Such a pleasant singing voice, too. And though I prefer blondes (my Wonder Woman’s of solid Nordic stock), if he’d shave, I might even be tempted to give ‘im a twirl around the dance floor. But since I don’t swing that way, I’d never—not even in my wildest bachelor years—take it any further…

Second thought, I have to wonder if s/he uses “Essence of Goat Dung” as his/her personal fragrance… Yeh, there goes the invitation onto the dance floor, boys n girls. Not gonna dance with goat dung, no matter how good the attached legs are.

Publishing Mohammed’s dance card at Basil’s Blog, The Conservative Cat and TMH’s Bacon Bits. Ah, heck, Maybe Don Surber would like a spin on the dance floor, too.

Update: In spite of the threat to his embassy, Itsapundit linked this lil piece. All i wanna know is, when the Moose-limbs burn down his embassy, who’s bringing the marshmallows? Yeh, yeh, I know Mohammed’s bringing the hot dogs…

“Religion of Peace”… (MHWA)

Via Stop the ACLU and Yahoonews:

A Pakistani cleric announced Friday a $1 million bounty for killing a cartoonist who drew Prophet Muhammad, as thousands joined street protests and Denmark temporarily closed its embassy and advised its citizens to leave the country.

Now, if Pat Robertson or some other fun-damn-mentalist falsely claiming a Christian purpose had announced a $1,000,000 bounty on Andres Serrano for having wrought “Piss Christ” do you think we’d ever hear the end of the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth from Mass Media Podpeople, Hollyweirdites, Loony Left Moonbats and their ilk about how oppressive and evil Christianity is?

But where’s the mass outcry when a Muslim “cleric” makes such an outrageous announcement? Nowhere, mon frere, cos such an announcement is well within the mainstream of Muslim theology, and the MMP/LLM/HW meme is that Islam is a “religion of peace,” therefore, inciting to murder by Muslims is a peaceful act, or some other such idiotic line of reasoning…

Oh, and the next time you meet a soi disant “moderate Muslim” do ask him if he repudiates violence in the name of his religion. If he says yes, then ask him if he then repudiates The Butcher of Medina, Mohammed (who rots in hell forever). If he says no, then tell him clearly that his repudiation of violence in the name of his religion is a flat out lie.

Just for fun

[edit: Light day today. Grateful for the guest authors keeping my average posts-per-day up around normal… and raising the level of discourse here at twc at the same time. Thanks, y’all! Wanna game some brains? Try the lil psy-op below… ]

Here in America’s Third World Countyâ„¢, ther’es one thing that travels faster than light: gossip. And sooner or later—think of the “tellephone game”—any gossip about oneself comes around in greatly exaggerated forms.

Soooo, I have recently begun planting juicy tidbits about myself in the ears of some of the most egregious gossips with the injunction “Now, don’t let this get out!” included to assure it gets amplified and passed on.

Try it! It’s fun to hear jiucy bits repeated and then be able to say, “Oh, yeh, that came from XXXxxxx, cos I planted it with him/her to see how fast he/she would spread it.”

Bumfuzzled looks, laughs and more than a few “I’ve gotta try that!”s.

Fun.

Against the fall of night

Some will recognize the title of this post as the title of a book by Arthur C. Clarke written in 1948 in a serialized version—IIRC—and issued in one volume in 1953. And those who recognize both the title and the book will immediately recognize the meme and fill in the gaps of this post rather readily, even though this post will address only one of many issues that would fit with that meme.

Those who have never read the story, will simply not “get” this post quite so fully (which, now that I’ve mentioned it, makes that lack of a shared meme a meta-comment in itself… )

That’s just one of many values of shared memes: the ability to invoke a broad concept and trust that the reader or hearer will have a fuller understanding of what’s going on than the plain text of the article or story in which the meme is embedded says.

There is more to the invocation of a shared meme, but that will suffice for this post.

Now, here’s the nut of the post.

Angel, of Woman Honor Thyself, has an evocative post up, Democracy, or something like it (read the post here) that deals with what I might call the problem of an Islamic democratic republic. Interesting post, indeed.

But it spurred some thoughts in me, naturally. 🙂

Pakistan is indeed a mess. *sigh*

But Angel’s observation that “50 percent [of Pakistanis] are illiterate” struck a nerve. There’s “illiterate” and then theres… “illiterate,” American style, where half of the graduates of four-year colleges in the U.S. (according to a recent survey, another article here) _can_ sound or puzzle out words, but are clueless when it comes to comprehending the content of a newspaper editorial or… a soup can label.

*profound sigh*

(Which is worse? Someone who can’t drive and doesn’t or someone who can’t drive and tries to? Or more closely, which is worse: People who can’t read the directions on a prescription bottle or people who _think_ they can read, but can’t comprehend the instructions?)

BTW, two-year college grds (usually an “A.B.” degree) came in at less than 30% being able to comprehend normal written English.

(Oh, and in understanding “complex” literacy tasks—like charts that show the relationship between exercise and blood pressure—four year college grads in the survey cited above scored about a 30% literacy rate!)

Now, even if these folks can puzzle out the words in an article or book, if they can’t demonstrate comprehension of the content, how much better off are they—and our society—thinking they can read… when they plainly cannot really read?

And then there’s the vast abyss between functional literacy and true literacy.

“There is a tide…” was once a meme which would evoke a profound metaphor, but now? And there are many such that have been repaced by shallow metaphors, weak analogies, cultural illiteracy. “Western Civilization” is—for many reasons, most of them without any redeeming value whatsoever—withering. It seems to me that the meme referred to above is a profound metaphor for the crossroads we face: the Decline and Fall of Western Civilization… or its renaissance:

“There is a tide in the affairs of men,
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.”
–(Shakespeare, Julius Caesar)

“There is a tide…” and we can either catch the tide and make use of its energy or we can be swept under by it.

Of course, I firmly believe the miserable existence Pakistan seems destined for is a product of its Islamic-dominated culture: there is little of value in Islam, and none, IMO, that cannot be found in richer abundance in the heritage of Western Civilization.

But the societal juijitsu designed in the psyops efforts of communism to defeat “the west” has borne fruit in the more and more common acceptance of the “all cutures are of equal worth” meme used by communitst (seriously: revealed as a specific tactic in recently revealed Stalinist papers) organs to hamper our society. Others may well be just as recognizable, and they ALL depend on exploitation of a culurally illiterate society. From Armed and Dangerous, excerpted from the post, “Gramscian Damage“, this list:

  • There is no truth, only competing agendas.
  • All Western (and especially American) claims to moral superiority over Communism/Fascism/Islam are vitiated by the West’s history of racism and colonialism.
  • There are no objective standards by which we may judge one culture to be better than another. Anyone who claims that there are such standards is an evil oppressor.
  • The prosperity of the West is built on ruthless exploitation of the Third World; therefore Westerners actually deserve to be impoverished and miserable.
  • Crime is the fault of society, not the individual criminal. Poor criminals are entitled to what they take. Submitting to criminal predation is more virtuous than resisting it.
  • The poor are victims. Criminals are victims. And only victims are virtuous. Therefore only the poor and criminals are virtuous. (Rich people can borrow some virtue by identifying with poor people and criminals.)
  • For a virtuous person, violence and war are never justified. It is always better to be a victim than to fight, or even to defend oneself. But ‘oppressed’ people are allowed to use violence anyway; they are merely reflecting the evil of their oppressors.
  • When confronted with terror[ism] , the only moral course for a Westerner is to apologize for past sins, understand the terrorist’s point of view, and make concessions.

And we can see that the strategy of spreading these memes has worked to the detriment of our country—and indeed, of Western Civilization—on an increasingly subliterate and even illiterate society. A genuinely literate population would be more resitant to these nonsensical memes. And the fake “liberalism” that has no connection whatsoever to classic liberal thought but has gained so much sway in politics, the media and academia nowadays? All dependant on these lying memes, and each vulnerable to a literate public.

(An obvious corollary of “a genuinely literate population would be resistant to these nonsensical memes” suggests, in the presence of many Academia Nuts who embrace these lying communist memes, that a large number of Academia Nuts, Mass Media Podpeople, Hollyweirdites and Democraps are, at the very least, culturally illiterate… or traitors… or just plain old everyday stupid.) Hmmm…. can I take door numbers one, two and three, please?
