Sometimes, I Just Have to Say, “No”
A while back, I decided to give a Windows “news and tips” site a whirl and submitted a secondary email address in order to receive notices of site updates. Since then, it’s yielded a few interesting tidbits, but sometimes, “a few interesting tidbits” just doesn’t cut it.
Recently, a portion of a topic line stood out, as at least 2/3 of the topic lines received in updates from the site have. Again, not in a positive light. The portion–this time–that made me wince: “The reason behind its name revealed !”
WTF is with the (usual and customary, from this source) space between the last word and the punctuation? It’s stupid. And, as I said, usual from this source. But that’s just the normal quality of punctuation usage from this source. What about word usage and grammar?
In the same email update: “Not why it a browser.”
?!? Yes, that’s the entire sentence fragment posing as a sentence. Where’s the verb?
And then, “…to make it running as fast and stable as new.” No, dumbasses, “to make it RUN as fast and stable as new” would at least be marginally acceptable, although “fast and stable” in this context is problematic.
“Since the last couple of days I’m seeing… ” Obviously English is a second language for the writer. Either that or the writer is a recent American college graduate.
I’ve only scratched the surface of the ear-grinding English constructions in just this one email. I can’t take it anymore. Unsubscribing, with prejudice. *heh*

I Love It When a Plan Comes Together…
I’ve been in an email/phone dialog with someone who wants to make over an older P-4 computer as a Media Center PC. He wants to use Plex running in a Linux environment.
Well, I may be close to doing just that for him. In fact, it may even be easier using the distro I would prefer to use than using the distro he has suggested and the procedure he found. Using Ubuntu, as the Pex site suggests, requires editing a system file. OK, that’s actually quite easy to do, and in fact can be done entirely from within the package manager itself, but still, using Linux Mint 11 (which is Ubuntu-based) is easier still, since the code line suggested by the Plex site fails and the package manager in Mint already has the source for Plex listed… Just one or two steps easier, not a biggie, really.
But… what I’d really like to do is take the Puppy Linux 5.2.8 distro I have installed to run off a USB flash drive and install Plex to it. Looks like it’ll have to be compiled from a Slackware versions, though, since Puppy just doesn’t seem to want to use the Ubuntu/Minty sources. *sigh* A couple more steps. I may just be too lazy for that. *heh* But… the OS and media server both running off a flash drive? That would be cool.
Now, Here’s a People With the Right Idea

Of course, participatory government depends upon a literate and well-informed populace, something Iceland has and the U.S. no longer does.
But were such a thing to take place here–a literate and well-informed electorate to effect a peaceful, constitutional revolution, I’d like to see one thing especially come from it.
I’d like to see a change to the eighth amendment excluding both elected federal officials and “feddle gummint bureaucraps” from protections against “cruel and unusual punishment” so those convicted of abusing their offices/positions could be tarred, feathered and used as “parade torches” on July 4th every year.
Of course, it would take following the amendment process fully, so that such proper and due punishments could be effected legally… 🙂

Here, he defines “patriotism” and “irresponsibility” and unwittingly provides testimony to citizens who would prefer a responsible patriot, at the very least, in the office of the Presidency:
If there is any justice, any balance in the universe, this clip–the central “witness” by The Zero to his own definitions of “irresponsible” and “unpatriotic”–will haunt him for the rest of his natural days and, at the very least, will serve to hoist him by his own petard in 2012. I get email offers from Mother Earth News all the time. It’s all because I purchased a set of 40 years of MEN on CDs some time ago (now, that was a good buy: buried in those CDs, along with all the hyperventilating about Evul Capitalizm Destroying the Wurld is also a wealth of very useful how-to stuff… and the hyperventilating is amusing) Yeh, yeh, I know I can unsubscribe, but I find the blatant commercializing of greenie values funny.

So much to mock, so little desire to spend the effort…
Linked in the email is a buncha overpriced crap you can get better versions of at Walmart, “Tarjhay” or Amazon.com, if you really wanted to. But I mean, who really wants reusable grocery bags? Just another thing to throw in the wash all the time. Plastic’s great. Plenty of uses 1 2 3, and anyone who really wants to pour money down a rat hole (instead of pounding sand in it like any sensible person) in today’s economy rather than have a useful resource they’re already paying for is, IMO, an idiot.
Oh, and there’s plenty of oil and more than enough inexpensive energy available with current known reserves and technologies to last mankind into as rich a future as we might want. All that’s required to make use of these things is to stop listening to the greenies, cut them OUT of the political system, let them rot on the vine. Real conservationists (what people who care about clean water, clean air, “clean” soil, renewable resources, and the like were called before the advent of the ‘environmental” religion) USE what is available as widely as they can, not simply crush anyone who wants to use it at all or play the “I’m morally superior because I wear sandals made out of roots and bark by third world slaves,” game.

A question posed in an online forum has resulted in all the usual suspects churning the aether… The question: “Are Homosexuals Discriminated Against?”
Lots of discussion, much of it from advocates of “normalizing” and mainstreaming homosexual behavior, including many, many who assert that not allowing homosexuals to “marry” is adverse discrimination and others who assert that special protections and privileges for homosexuals is a worse problem.
One thing I’ve noticed in the discussion is that advocates of what are, in fact, special, society-altering privileges for homosexuals both claim absolute moral authority and superior reason to be on their side. Unfortunately, to this point, none of this group has been able to marshall anything but argument by assertion (with no supporting facts) and continual dropping of the “homophobe bomb”.
And then there are the relatively calm advocates of homosexuals being granted special privileges and protections who assert their best arguments so:
“Homosexuality doesn’t change society, it’s apart of it.”
*sigh*
Really? He either meant “apart FROM it” or “A PART of it”. Frankly, since practicing, AND admitting but not practicing, homosexuals make up only about 3% of society, and are a dead end, “apart from it” is probably closer to the truth, but probably not what he meant to say.
