Oh, Great *sigh*

*heh* So, I have MediaPortal working well (not with the QAM channels my TV card is designed to catch, but the others, OK) on this PC and can tune in over 70 channels and… there’s not one single solitary thing worth watching on any of them all night long.

Typical of TV recently, though. Guess I need to look into Netflix and/or Amazon’s movie rental plans if I want to get all that much use from this thing for “TV” viewing. But not until after midweek, at the earliest. My connection that was between 7 and 8 mbs a few days ago has now developed problems and Wednesday’s the first day my provider has a serviceman available. Fortunately, the one (you read that right: one) that services this area is quite good.

‘S’all right. I have MORE than enough to keep me busy w/o a reliable internet connection. Now, if only this will post the first time I hit “publish”… 😉

Understanding the Economic Downturn

Douglas Wilson adds his common sense perspective to understanding the economy. A snippet:

Think of it this way. Suppose you and a buddy bet on the big game, and he bets you a zillion badillion dollars that his team is going to win. You take him up on it, but they lose. He promises to pay you next Tuesday, and you rush home all excited, eager to tell your wife about your good fortune. On the way home, because God has answered all your prayers, you go on a shopping spree involving SUVs, boats, motor homes, flat screen televisions, and so forth. When it turns out your friend doesn’t really have that kind of money — and if he did, he wouldn’t be giving you any — the global economy has not really lost a zillion badillion dollars. There will be some hard adjustments for you to the tune of whatever you bought and can’t take back, but the figure that dazzled you was not real wealth.

Most of the “losses” never existed to begin with, and real wealth hasn’t been lost at all; some has just found new homes.

Listing Starboard: Goofs and Gaffes and Booboos, Oh My!

Just a few wee incidents in the life of the most competent, carring, transparent and ethical administration since the Founding to warm the cockles of a curmudgeon’s heart.

Toby Harnden at The Telegraph has his top ten lineup of Obama administration goofs, gaffes and booboos in text/video format. Chuckle and groan simultaneously as Obamabiden does its best to demonstrate just how stupid American voters are. One of my favs:

I checked as carefully as I could given the quality of the video, and I do not believe our beloved Blockhead-in-Chief did any damage to the helicopter. (Do note how much hay the Mass Media Podpeople Hivemind did NOT make of this–or O’s “makes a better window than a door” play as opposed to all the playing up of similar incidents where Gerald Ford “got his clumsy on”.) Sadly, the incident did not appear to have knocked any sense into the Dunderhead-in-Chief…

The “most transparent” administration in the history of the world… plans to block press access to a press award ceremony. ?!? Uh-huh, that’s right.

Barack Obama was elected commander in chief promising to run the most transparent presidential administration in American history.

This achievement and the overall promise of his historic administration caused the National Newspaper Publishers Assn. to name him “Newsmaker of the Year.”

The president is to receive the award from the federation of black community newspapers in a White House ceremony this afternoon.

The Obama White House has closed the press award ceremony to the press.

Makes sense of a very Orwellian kind, doesn’t it?

The O! ought to learn to treat his teleprompter better. After all, it IS “Obama’s Brain”. Dumbass. “Great orator” MHWA…

Multiple AIG gaffes by the O! Team noted by… Maureen Dowd! Now, that’s gotta hurt, O!

Addendum: Not to be passed by, O! “sent” a video “NooRuz” greeting to Iran. Now, I could be missing something here, but isn’t iran ruled by (essentially) a dictatorship of hard line Islamic mullahs? And isn’t “NooRuz” (or however the thing is properly transliterated) a Zoroastrian new year celebration? And haven’t the Disciples of The Butcher of Medina roundly condemned Zoroastrianism for centuries? And was not the Muslim conquest of Iran marked by bloodbaths featuring Zoroastrian worshipers? And have not Muslim rulers since that time marked their rule by periodic persecution of Zoroastrianism? Has The Most Competent Ruler Since the Founding of the World struck again?

(Although, perhaps this is a note of support for some sort of Zoroastrian underground… And I do note that, yes, Nooruz is indeed celebrated widely in Iran. It’s just amusing to watch the O! mix his multi-culti crap up all over the place.*heh*)

Well, doubtless you can find more in the administration that has managed to match its spending splurge only with the number of nominees to admin posts who have refused to be part of funding the government in the past, but it’d just be piling on for me to note more here.

Is this how the American Experiment is to end, not with a bang but with a pratfall prexy?

Eliminating Life’s Lil Speed Bumps…

…one at a time. This one: download/upload speeds for my internet connection. I was pretty well pleased for several years after ditching dialup for a cable internet cnnection, because I went from a nominal 56kbs connection to a nominal 3mbs connection. Pretty good. Then my service provider began upgrading and things improved beyond that for a while, until enough users in my neighborhood began dragging the real connection speed down, clogging the pipes, as it were, in our shared node.

But recently, my cable company has undergone another round of service enhancements, and now,

speedtest01

And

speedtest021

…are pretty normal upload/download speeds.

Nice, since I’ve begun streaming more media and am considering a Netflix or Amazon addition to our media use (just discovered that Amazon.com both sells and rents movies–knew I could buy ’em there, but the rental part came as a surprise). I like our local rental place–good folks and all–but finding movies there can be a bit difficult (or impossible) from time to time, and sometimes we just feel like a bag of popcorn and a good flick. When–hopefully this summer–I cobble together a HTPC for the main TV, we’ll be glad of the bigger bandwidth pipe and faster flow for streaming/downloading those movies.

Added to My Wish List

Newly added to my “Redneck Geek’s I just GOTTA get me one-a these gizmos!” list:

Mosquito Raygun

A redneck geek’s dream toy…

(Hint, dudes: DDT is easier, cheaper and as safe. Yes, safe, despite Rachel Carson’s lies, as entomologist (that’s “bug scientist”) and mountaineer J. Gordon Edwards demonstrated by eating a teaspoon full–a truly massive amount for one “animal” of human size to ingest at one time–of the stuff weekly for about 30 years with no apparent ill effects. Yeh, he’s dead. Died at age 84… while mountain climbing. You should die so healthy.)

Charles Murray: Tongue in Cheek

Well, he had much, much more to say in his American Enterprise Institute 2009 Irving Kristol lecture, but this comment from his introductory remarks is too sweet to pass up:

…I am so naïve about economics that I continue to think that we have a financial meltdown because the federal government, in its infinite wisdom, has for the last two administrations aggressively pushed policies that made it possible for clever people to get rich by lending money to people who were unlikely to pay it back.

Oh! *ROFL* (and hurting while I do… ) That’s rich.

Go read the rest.

Congress Should Lead by Example

Speaking of irresponsible, greedy businessmen whose greed and incompetence have been instrumental in causing the recession, Senator Charles Grassley, R-IA, has infamously said,

“They need to do one of two things. The Japanese do it best. You either apologize, or you commit suicide.”

I agree wholeheartedly, Senator Grassley. Now, will you and your fellow congresscritters simply lead by example? Show ’em how it’s done! After all, it is YOU and your ilk–Dhimmicraps and wannabe Dhimmicrap Repugnican’ts–who were PRIMARILY responsible for causing this recession. I’d buy a ticket to watch you and your fellow congresscritters commit sepuku. Heck, I’d buy a few tickets and hand ’em out to local pols, pour encourager les autres, as it were.
