Why the United States Has Lost So Much in Latin America

By LomaAlta at Linknzona

The facts are not in dispute. During this Administration’s watch the geopolitical situation in Latin America has deteriorated well beyond the tragic losses of any previous Administration. Communist tyrants rise in Venezuela, Bolivia, and now Nicaragua and socialism is on the march in other countries. President Reagan’s successes in spreading democracy and freedom in Latin America appear to have been stopped. Let’s examine some of the possible reasons.

Negligence. This Administration appears to be focused on the war on terrorism, particularly the Middle East and has neglected the problems arising in the countries of our neighbors to the south. Indisputable evidence of Middle Eastern terrorists increasing their presence in Latin America and illegally crossing our southern border with help of Latin American gangs is readily available [1]. These facts have been well known for years but emphasizing them goes against President Bush and his Administration’s open border, pro-illegal immigration policies as well as against most of the Democratic leadership and their Mainstream Media. Thus, little is heard about this growing threat. Even less is heard about its impact in Latin America. This leads directly to the President and his Administration’s relationships with Latin American leaders and through them, its people.

Submission, not Partnership.
Latin Americans, and particularly Mexicans, like most people, respect power and its just and successful application. In addition, the cultural implications of power and weakness are viewed through the lens of machismo throughout Latin America and especially in Mexico [2].

The USA, as the world’s undisputed Super Power, must look weak and ineffectual to the rest of the World and downright mariposa-like to our friends south of the border as it panders to Presidente Fox, leaves its borders open during war time, and sacrifices the security and well being of its citizens to foreign invaders. Such weak and foolish behavior engenders disgust and dislike of the USA throughout Latin America in proportion to how much they take advantage of us. Mexico is first in line, of course, but can you imagine a president of any South American country calling our President the devil at the UN in New York? Hugo Chavez, the dictator of Venezuela did exactly that this fall. There were no repercussions. This will embolden other thugs and bullies to spit in our President’s face and regard the USA as a weak, stumbling, and blinded paper tiger.

Bumbling. How unsuited for representing the USA is Secretary Condi Rice? With the exception of John Bolton at the UN, I have yet to see any diplomatic courage and vision from this Administration. It seems Secretary Rice has fallen into the trap of so many of our diplomats. She sees her clients as other diplomats, world opinion is of paramount importance to her, and the national interests of the USA appear to be lost in the swirl of trips, functions, receptions, parties and all types of activities we call “form over substance”. A good example of this is diplomatic meddling in Nicaragua [3].

This is a brief overview of how the Bush Administration has mismanaged USA activities and interests in Latin America. Why is this Administration so much worse than previous ones? Previous administrations have bumbled, submitted to Mexican presidents, and neglected Latin America. But President Bush is the first president to put the interests of a foreign power – Mexico, above the interests of the USA.

How can a foreign leader respect a President who does not put his country first in negotiations? We all grew up with bullies. The vast majority of us learned that the quickest way to stop a bully from attacking or extorting something from us was to resist, and, to fight back if necessary. Sure it was scary and rough to be hit or beaten; but just the knowledge that you would not submit was almost always enough to send the bully in search of weaker victims.

Bullies are cowards and seek out the weakest victims they can find. The weaker you are, the more the cowards bully you, and the less they respect you. This is true on every school ground; and it is true among nations as we have learned over and over. To be weak is to invite attack.

For a nation to submit is for it to surrender its freedom and sovereignty. This is the principal reason our relations with Latin America are so bad and why communism is on the rise again there. The USA, through President Bush and the political leadership of both parties, has submitted to Mexico. Illegal immigration is the occupation of one peoples’ country by another people. President Bush not only submits to Mexico, he encourages and supports their continued bullying.

Valour-IT: Get Yer AUCTION Items HERE!!!!

OK, the kind owner of Truth Laid Bear, NZ Bear, has set up an auction page for us. No as formal as ebay, but, there are some incredible items to be had.

Here’s the deal: Those of us focused on the Valour-IT fiund raiser at close rnage will know about this. Those wandering about in the rest of the universe will not. Your assignment, kind readers, is to spread the word far and wide and close by, to get the juices flowing.

The Auction page location is here. Clikc on the the link, I dare you…and, get youe wallet ready!

At this very moment, it appears that the only takers are the Navy, with 13 items up for bid. at least we’re ahead somewhere! GO TEAM NAVY!

Chapomatic has graced us with a set of four wine goblets from COMSUBGRU SEVEN, posters of USS TEXAS, a SAC and a USN Challenge Coin.

Bubblehead of “The Stupid Shall Be Punished” blog has coins and a key chain from the pre-comm unit for USS SEAWOLF (SSN-21). This is a “class ship” (names the class of units that follow) of the subs built after the LOS ANGELES (SSN-688) Class.. Little pieces of history here. Great for military collectors.

Jason of has listed two copies of the book “No HIgher Honor,” the story of the USS SAMUEL B ROBERTS (FFG-58) when she hit the mine in the Persian Gulf. Exceptionally well written, balancing detail with readability. Reviews on his site from the crewmen compliment him for telling the story well. Brad Peniston (the author), with personalize each copy for the purchaser when he signs them before shipment. Brad was responsible for connecting Valour-IT to the Army Times reporter who got the story on the web and I understand it will be in print this week.

Neptunus Lex has offered up many items. Two flight suits, actually worn on combat missions (but he’s washed them), a pilot’s helmet (cracked, but still a great conversation piece, and ball caps from the Geroge HW BUSH or RONALD REAGAN carriers. Oh, and then there is a printed out and signed copy of his onlone novel or blogvel, “Rythyms.”

Her’es my advertisement for Le’xs book (feel free to cut and paste this into an email you’ll send to everyone you know, and add to it if you’re read his work!):

What if you had the chance to own a draft copy of “THe Hunt for Red October” or “Team Yankee,” before anyone in the publishing world had heard of guys named Clancy or Coyle? What would that be worth, not only in bragging rights, but in terms of real historical value? A soon to retire Navy Captain, and F/A-18 aviator for his entire carrer, with shipboard, command, and TOPGUN instructor jobs in his wake has typed out a read that certainly equals, if not exceeds the fine works of those action novel authors we have come to see being wildly successful. “Rhythms” is such a work. In the auction to support Valour-IT, you have the truly rare opportunity to cheat history and get you own original, signed hard copy of this novel, that not only puts you in the cockpit, but make the adrenaline flow as if you were there. Gripping, edge of your seat, begging for more emotions will overwhelm you as you take a journey from the deck of a carrier launching combat missions, into the minds of the pilots as they focus on putting ordnance where it counts, and also below decks, where the many thousands make it possible. Expensive prpopsition? Sure, but how much would you pay for theat draft of “Red Ocotber” if you had it all to do again? And, oh, NOT AVAILABLE IN ANY STORE NEAR YOU (or not near you)!

OK..GET THE WORD OUT!!!!!

Why I will vote (almost entirely) Republican on Tuesday

[Note: this was intended as a much longer post, but (sigh of relief from beleaguered readers 🙂) I just ran outa time.]

Anyone who’s read this blog for long knows I don’t believe there’s a lot of difference between Republican’ts and Democraps on the national level (both are firmly committed to unconstitutional Big Government, for example), but that I do recognize that what little differences there are are important enough to vote against the Democraps at nearly every opportunity.

That said, let me attempt to very briefly use a local race where I will vote for the Republican (not exactly a national Republican’t) candidate as an example of something I think does carry over to a show a like, significant (though still relatively minor in the scheme of things), difference even at the state and national levels between the two parties.

(Note: in the examples below, I will make some major redactions in order to obscure location and candidates, and for effect–you’ll see what I mean–although readers located in America’s Third World County will likely be able to tell who I’m quoting.)

Candidate #1 in a race for a county position lists as qualifications for the position:

“…hands on administrative experience… more in touch with the needs of our youth, hard working families and… a strong committment to ease the burdens of our seniors… over fifteen years of public service experience…” [working for a non-profit NGO]

Candidate #2 in that race lists:

“…in the office for eight years and Chief Deputy ____ for six years… over 100 hours state training on the _____ _____ level… 60 hours state training on dealing with _____ _____ issues…familiar with all aspects of the _____ _____’s office.

Now, you might think from candidate #1’s list of qualifications that the position is one dealing with outreach to youth, to families needing assistance, to the elderly, right?

County Clerk. Responsible for the nitty-gritty of elections, County Commission minutes, workman’s comp claims against the county by employees (the “60 hours training” listed by #2) and issuing of liquor, notary and other county-issued licenses.

Candidate #1, who lists things that have damn all to do with being able to do the job but are nice-sounding buzzwords is naturally the Democratic candidate. Candidate #2, who apparently knows that when the newspaper asks for ones qualifications that what should be listed are, well, qualifications for the job, is naturally the Republican candidate.

And so it goes at the state and national level, getting progressively worse as the responsibilities expand: Democraps invariably list nothing but smoke, mirrors (and as the stakes rise, lies) as reasons to vote for them. Republican’ts are at least slightly more limited by what they can give as reasons in that they are at least slightly more likely to list actual, well, reasons.

Light Blogging This Week

Yeh, I know it’s election week, so shame on me. I have one real post on the election that I’m working on, now. Most of the rest here at twc this week will be x-posts from GTB, Fair tax, STACLU and any willing contributors who’ve posted in the past.

‘S’a busy week here in America’s Third World County, so likely the blogging from this keyboard (apart from the above and the inevitable linkfests that direct my weekly blog reading :-)) will simply be light.

Commenters want to have something posted on the front page? Include interesting links or news in an email to me.

Yeh. Time/energies will be that tight @twc this week.

🙂

Soldiers Angels

DO take special note of Chaoric Synaptic Activity’s post on Project Valor-IT (below). CSA is taking a leadership stance in promoting this exceptionally worthy cause, and I want to encorage everyone who stops in at America’s Third World County to drop by his place for full and continuing updates. While he has an open invitation to post here, and I fully expect to see updates for the next week (and more, perhaps), I do believe that visiting his blog for the full effect will serve you well.

Thanks, Curt, for the service you are doing us all in reminding us of this worthy project.

Project Valor-IT is a project begun and administered by Holly Aho’s wonderful Soldiers Angels. Visit there, as well.

Valour-IT – Laptops for Wounded Troops with Voice Software

It’s almost he month in which we celebrate those who have put on a uniform of the Armed Forces of the United States and defended our country.

This year, as last year at this time, the MilBlogging community “virtually” gathered to care for their own, in particular, those who have suffered wounds in the War on Terrorism that have left them unable to communicate in the normal manner so many of they, and us have become accustomed to: Via typing their thoughts and greetings into a computer.

Technology has an answer for this type of disability and beginning in 2005, individuals stepped up to the plate to solve this problem by supplying our wounded warriors with laptop computers and vioce activated software, that overcomes the disabling injuries that have rendered the fingers of these men and women unusable.

The genesis of the project was an Army Captain, Chuck Ziegenfuss, who had been MilBlogging before he was wounded in an IED attack, and discussions with Beth, another blogger and plain old American citizen and school teacher with a heart to do something, from Fuzzilicious Thinking, who put their heads together and kicked this off. It’s a testimony about those who complain vs. those who just get it done. Beth and Soldier’s Angels have now supplied, with the generosity of people from around the world, over 500 laptops. Quite an accomplishment for not working this program for even two years.

The name given to this charity is “Valour-IT,” and as last year, we dedicate the days from now until November 11th as a period to solicit and gather funds to put more systems into the possession of those who have served and now are in need of our help to attempt to restore their ability to use computers to communicate with their friends, family and in the business world.

If you’re not familiar with this project, here is the link to the site where you can find the legitimacy, the history, who is supporting this program in the business world, and testimonies, as well as the link to donate.

for some detailed info on exactly how the Valour-IT laptops are helping the wounded, read this post from Beth, titled “More than a Laptop.”

If you’re familiar with Valour-IT, I ask for your support in spreading the word, telling the story, and checking with the person who controls the purse strings in your household to determine the level of funding you’re able to provide.

I plan to email my contacts, asking the same from them. for those who have a areas where you can post hard copy notices, here is a link to 8 flyers already made up publicize Valour-IT. Print out a few and hang them in full view of you’re workmates.

I will endeavor to post the statuss of the fund collections daily, as they are available from the blogs where they are doing the central accounting. We will ask you to decide which service you will donate under, but…in the long run, it matters not, except to provide some of us with the bragging rights if “our” service bests the others.

Update: Black Five, about the biggest MilBlogger there is, has his kick off post up here! Other service team leaders are listed there, but…send your $$$ to the troops thru the Navy button! (Coasties welcomed here!)

Want to play? Sign your blog up here.

Script to add the donation meter is (remove the double quotaion marks from around the first and last “carets” to make the scripting function):

November unSurprise: Mass Media Podpeople Hivemind Psychosis

NYT says Saddam had clear plans for making nuclear weapons, but it’s George Bush’s fault that these plans were irresponsibly made public… refuting the NYT’s false claims that Bush lied (oops! the article forgot to actually say that—and besides, Bush lied about Saddam being a threat, anyway, right?).

Well, that’s pretty much the way the article actually reads, when one reads for the facts and throws out the propagandizing.

The Hivemind is showing signs of schizoid behavior. Paraphrasing/encapsulating: “Bush lied about WMD/nukes, etc.” vs. “Saddam close to making a nuke in 2002.”

Of course, the Hiveminded NYT can’t seem to make its “November Surprise” even that clear. Instead, it tries to dress up the facts in “It’s all Bush’s fault” clothing in order to distract from the nuclear weapons plans not hidden behind the nonexistant curtain. (Oh, and the simple fact that the Iraqi plans and capabilities were revealed is an awful crime in and of itself, too, ya know… “threatens security”–riiiight. The security of the NYT’s lies and distortions.)

The article bloviates about how dangerous these Iraqi documents are… while never mentioning that the very existence of these documents reveals that the NYT (among others) is guilty of falsely accusing Bush of “lies” bout WMD (and particularly about Iraq’s nuclear capability development).

The Mass Media Podpeople Hivemind is so large and clumsy it can’t even tell it’s trying to eat its cake and still have it, too.

The psychosis just keeps getting more and more pronounced, doesn’t it?

Surprise, surprise!

Not. I’ve given up trying to make sense of the Hivemind’s arguments, apart from taking passing notice of how easily it’s distracted by bright, shiny objects.

Stop the ACLU: it’s earned the title American Criminal Lame-excuses Union

Crossposted from Stop The ACLU

I was going to talk about the dishonest argument the ACLU made in its attack on Hazelton, PA for trying to crackdown on illegal immigration problems. They argued that it was not the place of small communities to create laws fashioned to their own unique problems on illegal immigration, but the Federal government’s responsibility. Of course this argument does not reflect the ACLU’s true beliefs on the topic. If the Federal government created a similar law as Hazelton the ACLU would find a different argument to oppose it. The argument was, however, good enough to convince a Clinton appointed judge to temporarily block their ordinances.
