Wednesday Open Trackback Alliance Post: Do You Know Where YOUR Taxes Are?

[OTA Wednesday at third wirld countyâ„¢. Link here and trackback. See the end of the post for more.]

From The National Taxpayers Union:

Why NTU Supports the FairTax:

The Fair Tax Act of 2005 would promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.

And on the Petition page, this:

… the FairTax plan would replace today’s indecipherable Tax Code with a flat-rate national retail sales tax plan that would:

  • repeal many federal taxes, including personal income, estate, gift, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, self-employment, and corporate taxes without reducing revenue;
  • abolish the Internal Revenue Service, eliminate embedded taxes in goods and services that amount to billions of dollars, and bring offshore corporate dollars back into the U.S. economy;
  • be fair for low-income Americans by providing universal tax rebates for consumption up to the poverty line;
  • reward job creation, hard work, and individual responsibility…

Check out the info at The National Taxpayers Union and get on board! Your children and grandchildren will bless you.

And get the book, darn it! 🙂

Keep Your Eyes On Poland

Gateway Pundit put up a post yesterday titled Poland Introduces “Martyrs of Our Time” Ad Campaign

one of the major Polish cities – Poznan will place posters in public transportation vehicles in a campaign designed to illustrate just who is being killed by Islamofascists around the world.  The action was started by the Foundation of St. Benedictus and was approved by local government. The Foundation’s director is Zbigniew Czerwinski who is also member of PiS and president of the Regional Council.

PiS is now also the ruling party in Poland. PiS means in Polish “Law and Justice”. It’s a right-wing conservative party. Also, Polish President Lech Kaczynski is from PiS.

You have to go to Gateway Pundit and look at the actuall posters they are very moving.

The question is how are the Islamofascists going to react to this story? And then how will the Polish government react to that reaction? I think it is safe to assume they will not be handled with kid gloves as France did, or Holland as the previous story illustrates.

Keep your eyes on Poland. This campaign is just about to begin and will run in several major polish cities including the capital of Warsaw.

Many of us were calling for US papers to publish the cartoons that were originally printed in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.  Some were saying the republishing of those cartoons was an unnecessary provocation that would hasten a war of civilizations.  I understood that argument but disagreed with it then and now. We need to recognize Islamofascism for what it is and confront the death and destruction that it has already caused.  Delaying the inevitable will only lead to more martyrs, and murder.

“A little eyeliner, some mascara, a smattering of powder and VOILA! There’s just no end to the magic one can accomplish with a little help from Revlon and Max Factor, is there? I offer as proof three outstanding BEFORE/AFTER shots. Simply amazing, ain’t it?”

So, tell me, Jean Fraud: Where are the stinkin’ records you’ve promised time and time again to release?

Liar.

Thought Experiment/Open Post

[Open Post: See Below]

Consider this a sort of snipe hunt for possible unintended consequences.

WHAT IF…

You discovered a new particle/wavicle analogous to photons but propogated by “gravity waves” (go ahead, call this fictional particle a “graviton”) and

WHAT IF…

You discovered a way to “modulate” photons in interaction with these gravitons in such a way as to capture/release energy in ways hitherto unimagined and

WHAT IF…

You engineered a “black box” that could be manufactured cheaply and be used to power a home, a car, virtually anything that can be powered with electricity, very, very, VERY inexpensively.

In addition, you discover that, like radio waves, gravity waves can be used for instantaneous communication without any interference with current technology, and that your lil photon/graviton generator can also be built so that it can store and manipulate data…

What would you do?

It seems a simple question, and most folks’ first response would be simple, as well: Market the puppy and become wealthy beyond anyone’s wildest imaginings.

Now, before you respond, try to imagine the riipple effect of such devices freely released into society. Try to imagine the positive AND negative effects… and the effects of the postive and negative effects.

Go ahead and do try the lil thought experiment, and answer—eventually—in comments or a post of your own (link here, please so I can follow the imaginings, if you would). I have my own thoughts, but I’d like to reserve them so as not to influence yours any more than I already have.

(And yes, this lil thought experiment can be used as a meta-lesson applied to other things… )

Guard the Borders-Learn the language, dammit!

NOTE: the title of this post is mine. The content below is from Euphoric Reality.

As a parent with two kids in Texas schools, I have a pet peeve. I really, really resent that their education is hampered by kids who can’t speak English. I’ve seen classes that move mind-bogglingly slow as teachers have to work one-on-one with children who shouldn’t be there in the first place. It’s enough to make me grind my teeth in frustration!

I am a big proponent of the immersion method of learning a language. It is my firm belief that once in America, immigrants should learn our language, and the best way is by complete and total immersion. When we lived in Mexico, we placed my son into a public school in the local village so that he could learn the language more rapidly. I continued to teach him at home what he needed to know to keep his education above American standards, and his classroom experience was for language purposes only. We asked for no special considerations, we just did what was necessary. It was not easy, but it worked.

That is only one of the reasons it is so offensive to see our tax dollars paying for immigrants, many of them here illegally, to receive special dispensations because they can’t (or won’t) learn our language! But why should they learn, when almost everything is bi-lingual anyways?

Monday Open Post/Olympics? What Olympics?

OK, so yeh, I watched 5 mins of curling (that’s a sport? An athletic competition? Why not “Ice TiddlyWinks”?) and the last group of women figure skaters—I dunno why…

*yawn*

Just more non-participatory mind-(and butt-)numbing.

But RandomYak sure enjoyed the heck outa the stuff. Different strokes.

Lost Camera

I have just read something that makes me so angry I say we declare war on Canada and invade tonight!

Ok seriously my buddy Tiberius over at DSOTW dug up this story somewhere.

It seems this woman named Judith went to Hawaii on vacation and lost her expensive camera with over 500 of the pictures she had taken on her trip. So she created a blogspot blog called “Lost Camera” (another great blog name!) and loaded up a bunch of pictures that strangers had taken of the places she visited to kinda sorta keep a journal of the places she had seen.

Then the story takes an interesting twist. Her next post about 2 weeks after the original starts like this:

I hadn’t posted here in a while, because just after the last post, I got a call from an excited park ranger in Hawaii that “a nice Canadian couple reported that they found your camera!” She gave me their name and number, and I eagerly called to reclaim my camera.

Sounds like good news: she is gonna get her camera and all her pictures back, right?… WRONG!

The post goes on:

Kakistocracy: Government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens.

In politics, education and entertainment, as a general rule the worst, stupidest and most venal rule.

Take Congress (Please!!!). Jean Fraud sKerry. Teddy “Swimmer” Kennedy. “Leaders of the pack.” OK, ‘Nuff said. Saves a load of time and typing.

Education? Just look at the idiotic “let’s experiment on the children” fads over the past 35-40 years emmanating from the fever swamps of schools of education:

The Real Deal on The Port Deal

As I have already said I am against this. Not because it is the UAE I just don’t think it is a good idea to let any foreign government operate portions of our ports. A lot of information has come out since this was first blatantly misreported.  Today Wizbang and Big Lizards have some very interesting information and supposition.  That when combined with what I have learned from several sources including an excelent interview on Hugh Hewitt’s show with Robert Kaplan (transcript here, audio here)  and two fantastic posts by All Things Beautiful (the second here)  has me much more open to allowing this deal to happen.

My position was and is We should not allow foreign governments or foreign companies to operate parts of our port system.  However we already allow Chinese companies (owned by the Chinese government) a and several other foreign companies to operate parts of our ports all over the country. So I will now say I am open to allowing DPW to operate in this 6 ports if we are going to continue to allow other foreign companies to do the same thing.

Now on to Wizbang and Big Lizards.  In Jay’s post today titled Enemies to Port says a wise crack he made got him to thinking:

Income Taxes… *sigh*

One interesting thing about our income taxes for this year’s returns was the differential between fed and state. We’ve been doing a little every year to both reduce our tax burden and reduce our refund.

Yeh, I know that’s backasswards for some folks, but it makes sense. Our income is increasing by tiddly lil baby steps—which is fine for our situation. At the same time, we’ve been fine-tuning things here and there a little to decrease the bite the various governments take out during the year, so we have more of our money to work with throughout the year, thus a lower refund.

The ideal, as long as income taxation remains the norm, would be: do returns and owe nothing, get nothing back. Even steven.

This year, our total refunds—state andf fed—were well under $500, so although we e-filed, I did not request (or pay the fees for) direct deposit, simply requesting checks. The largest check by a good deal was to come from the state. (Need to work on state witholding/payments—overpaid too much during the year and the state had our money to play with instead of us having the money.) Yeh, it was still not much, but still, any overpayment is too much.

But here’s the cool thing. The check from the state was here three days after the return was e-filed (still waiting on the piddling lil check from the feds, naturally).

That’s as good as—or better than—some years’ direct deposits.

Wanna make sure that state treasurer keeps her job…

🙂

Still, alla this would be unecessary if we were to have a non-slavery tax put in place: The FairTax.
