I’ll admit to coming very close to pulling my hair out at its roots when I read, “there’s big special effects” in a post by a professional linguist and English grammarian.
*sigh*
“there is… effects”
And there is no sense of, urm, simple awareness of plurality or singularity in the selected text, either.
*profound sigh*
Yep, its almost as annoying as my own favorite Personal Pinata of Grammatical Fisk. Bet its not too difficult to figure out what it is. (Hint: if its not already obvious, its beyond me to explain it(s).)
Oh me, oh my! Could that be a very broad hint I see?
Closely related is misuse of apostrophes’ in many different way’s. *heh* (Oh, and how people can get “his” and “hers” right but not “its” is definitely a puzzler… )
Come on guys. You know that for the vast majority of the populace these days English is only a “second” language. I’m not talking about the immigrant population either.
Perri, *heh* 🙂
