ISP Woes… Again (Still) *sigh*

Again, Warning: May Bore You To Tears Compgeeky Gripe ahead. See further down the page for other posts. πŸ™‚

What’s with these folks? I can’t even get a SpeedTest.net page to fully load without (many) multiple reloads, and though I can get PingTest.net to load after a few tries, it returns:

PingTest-01

This after nearly a week of “not too bad” on the interruption of service front. Yep. Once again my ISP says they’ve fixed their problem… and haven’t.

Oh. Well.

(BTW, it took a couple of hours to post this, with autosave unable to even save a draft or uploading of the image you see here working until after about eight attempts (with complete system/network reboots and all the other things I could do to attempt to wake up the ISP’s servers.)

Micro-mini-update: 4 days later. Worse today. Two calls to phone support. One, the gal wouldn’t take the ice pick out of her ear and kept saying she couldn’t hear me (riiiiiight; she responded when she wanted to). The next, the guy didn’t try that ploy, but, although he could see drops on my line, he could do nothing, as usual, but schedule a tech to come by and waste both my time and the tech’s to simply tell me–AGAIN–that there’s no problem in my equipment and that the problem’s still on their end… *sigh*

  1. Sorry you’re dealing with your ISP – that’s no fun! [pout]

Me, I’m currently cussing out Audacity: it won’t output the sound on imported .mp3s, and it stops playback about 5 -10 seconds in anyway. The “equalizer” bounces around like it’s playing, but NO SOUND out! Grf!

I’d like to get it up and running, because I’d like to add some sound clips when I talk about a song I heard, and I’m thinking of doing a podcast occasionally…. *sigh*

Computers: wanna luv ’em, gotta hate ’em! πŸ˜‰

    1. Re: Audacity

The first thing I’d do? Check for updates, and whatever you find, reinstall the latest version. Other than that, check for Ubuntu updates; a sound feature could be futzed (I’ve actually run into that on Ubuntu more than once *sigh*).

  2. Well, I’m still wrestling with it. Oddly enough, I dragged in a couple mp3s and did a “blind” fade in/out without the sound, saved it to my desktop, and it played just fine outside of Audacity. So, I know the guts are working… I may try to see if it will accept a voice recording with an outside mic (just for giggles) tomorrow.

Other than that, I’m either going to see about using the 1.2.x version, or let the Beloved wrestle it into submission! πŸ˜‰

    1. “…and it played just fine outside of Audacity” !!! Tells me Audacity and Ubuntu may not be playing well together. One thing David might do is configure WINE to make sure Windows programs play well with audio apps and then you could try the cool lil Windows Audacity Portable (just run it from a flash drive). If the portable Windows version running under WINE works OK, then you’ll be onto something…

Or, just use another app as recommended by your resident guru. The learning curve won’t be steep.
