Here’s the problem…

The problem with government solving our problems–whether it’s a government of kings and dukes and earls or a government of presidents and senators and congressmen–is that rulers “fix” problems to suit themselves.

Ponder that one, Pinky.

Words to chill the soul:

“I’m from the government; I’m here to help.”

  1. I think, government can solve only global problems, it cant solve just the problem of one man, they can help poor folk or homeless, but they cant help just a man to buy a new house or new car.

  2. It’s a nice thought, Tomoyo, but consider: how has government “help” actually helped homeless folk or poor folk? My suggestion: go do volunteer work in homeless shelters that are financed with government funds. See how much real help is being offered and how much of the “help” just makes things worse. (I’ve actually done that, and I know the answer.)

Next, live in a “poor” neighborhood or community and observe what government handouts actually accomplish. Hint: from personal observation living in one such community where close to 90% of the inhabitants were on so-called “welfare” my guess would be that if your eyes were open you’d see that government handouts simply breed more “need”.

Neither of your examples persuade me that my premise is flawed. Indeed, from my experience and observations, I’d say you provided two of the prime examples of government “fixing things” to create situations where more “fixing” is then needed–not too good for the citizens, but good for politicians, because it gives them yet more excuses to expand the power they exercise, and… make the problems they’d worsened (or created) worse still.

  3. Government can’t solve global problems. It can only exacerbate them. The only legitimate purpose of government is to defend the people from tyrants and to ensure liberty in an ordered society. With heavy emphasis on LIBERTY.

  4. Perri! What in the world are you doing posting the Founders’ concept of the proper role of government! *heh* (That the Founders’ concept of the proper role of government just happens to strongly echo Romans 13, et al, is anathema to the commie-fag-(power)junkie political set, of course–with not-so-sincere apologies to George Carlin for hijacking the expression “commie-fag-junkie”)

TF: the model of governance you propose is a subset of Pournelle’s Iron Law of Bureaucracy:

Pournelle’s Iron Law of Bureaucracy states that in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people: those who work to further the actual goals of the organization, and those who work for the organization itself. Examples in education would be teachers who work and sacrifice to teach children, vs. union representative who work to protect any teacher including the most incompetent. The Iron Law states that in all cases, the second type of person will always gain control of the organization, and will always write the rules under which the organization functions.

Institution of useless or harmful government programs/bureaucracies–like soi disant “welfare” programs–isn’t nearly as big a problem as their perpetuation and expansion under Pournelle’s Iron Law.
