To those nasty coffee naysayers who are, one piece of research at a time, being revealed as the anti-coffee bigots they truly are.

Coffee Cuts Depression Risk In Women, New Study Shows

I’ve noted a few of the health benefits of coffee before, but this one, even though the study cited by the Puffingtom Host trendily limits itself to benefits for women, isn’t news to any longtime imbiber of The Holy Brew. Speaking of that wondrous bean brew, the fourth (cited) verse of the hymn just linked pronounces:

“And so today you bless us still
According to our dear Lord’s will.
O Caffeine Tree our gratitude
Is great, for you do lift our mood.”

Amen.

Winter’s Brew

What to do…

I love coffee,
I love beer,
I love cocoa when it’s cold around here.

I know! Make some semi-instant “2Xhot” cocoffee.

  1. Brew coffee.
  2. Add coffee to
  3. Hot cocoa mix* with
  4. a couple of drops of vanilla
  5. a pinch (or two) of cayenne pepper or a few drops of your fav hot sauce
  6. about 1/8-1/4 tsp freshly-ground cinnamon
  7. stir (I use a whisk) n sip
  8. sweeten to taste, if needed

Enjoy. The extra spiciness gives this a triple kick: the cocoa, the coffee and the cinnamon/cayenne really go well together! BTW, my first time, I had no cayenne handy, and I didn’t want to use the hot sauce I had available, so I used some chipotle chips, ground fine in a bladed coffee grinder I use for “hot” spices. The cinnamon was ground in a bladed coffee grinder I use for “sweet” spices, although given that I was using them together, I suppose I simply could have used the “hot” spices grinder.

Careful with the pepper, though. It’s easy to get too much for some “gringo” constitutions.

I suppose I really need to come up with a coffee-cocoa-pepper beer, though, cos 3 of 3 is bound to beat 2 of 3, right?

*Hot Cocoa Mix

Ingredients
10 cups dry milk powder
4 3/4 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar (I used sucralose–“Splenda”–just not made by the company that makes Splenda)
1 3/4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
1 3/4 cups powdered non-dairy creamer

Directions

In a large mixing bowl, combine milk powder, confectioner’s sugar, cocoa powder, and creamer. Stir till thoroughly combined. Store cocoa mixture in an airtight container. Makes about 15 cups mix, or enough for about 45 servings.

For 1 serving, place 1/3 cup cocoa mixture in a coffee cup or mug, and add 3/4 cup boiling water. Stir to dissolve. Top with dollop of whipped cream or a few marshmallows, if desired.

Note: I did the “stir thoroughly” bit, but I believe from now on I’ll do that, then put the mix through a small food processor to make it into a very fine powder, as I do with a chai mix I make.

New to twc central

Well, the old hand mill burr grinder we’ve been using for coffee has pretty much bit the dust. Oh, it still works, after a fashion, but I’ve been unable to fix the “loosy-goosy” action as metal parts begin to fatigue and wear out, because I cannot find proper replacements. So, it’s now relegated to decorative status and been replaced by:

Nice coffee mill, and the grind is easily modified, unlike our old handmill. I like the auto-shutoff, though I rarely need the feature since I make most of my coffee by the mugfull with the neat lil Bodum French press s-i-l-to-be gifted me with at Christmas.

12-oz is just about right for one of my fav mugs, but 2Tbs of beans–about what it takes to brew a robust cuppa joe in the lil Bodum after being nicely ground by the B&D mill–isn’t enough for the auto-shutoff to kick in on the coffee mill. Big deal. So I press a button twice.

O Blessed Holy Caffeine Tree!

Addendum:

Gourmet/Gourmand: is coffee “good drinks” or “good eats”? Doesn’t matter to me, cos I’m about to offend both.

In a tightwad’s never-ending search for the most value possible from EVERYTHING, I have settled on a compromise of good taste/value (of which, frankly, “good taste” is a value consideration) in my Fp coffee brewing. I’ve settled on two brewings (like two pressings of olive oil, I suppose) from the same grounds in my lil French press. The first is pretty much as instructed in the Bodum lit, except that I do no pour hot water over grounds in the Fp; I pour cold water over ’em, stir and then microwave the mixture. Then I do let it sit and brew up for another couple of minutes before pouring the first cup.

Then I commit my crime: I pour another load of cold water over the grounds and let that simply steep until I’ve finished my first cup and am ready to brew another. Then, microwave and steep.

The first cup: robust but certainly not “too strong” (whatever that means; how can coffee–great as simply beans chewed plain–be “too strong”? :-)). Second cup: more flowery and certainly a tad lighter, but still really coffee. Yes, I did try a third cup. *blech* Please trust me. It’s not an experience I’d wish on you. My worst enemy, sure, but not you. Of course, folks that think stuff brewed from a Folger’s can is coffee would probably like it well enough.

Benefits of The Holy Brew (#1 :-))

As anyone who’s read here very much knows by now, I am a beer drinker for two very important reasons: good beer–as opposed to the stuff mass market beer manufacturers pour through horses–tastes good, and beer has many very positive health benefits (yeh, I know that’s redundant) when drunk in moderation (between 1 and 3 beers per day, depending on age and body mass).

But before I became a confirmed drinker of the number two “Holy Brew” I was long a confirmed drinker of the number one “Holy Brew”: coffee.

Here are a few noted health benefits of coffee:

At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson’s, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones. 1

Not bad, eh? How about some more from the same source?

“People who smoke and are heavy drinkers have less heart disease and liver damage when they regularly consume large amounts of coffee compared to those who don’t.”

Now, I haven’t smoked anything (well, apart from five small pipesfull of tobacco I found that had been languishiung in a drawer for almost 20 years), for nearly a quarter of a century, but when I did smoke (pipe, cigar), it was always accompanied by copious amounts of… coffee.

Want more? OK, more from WebMD,

There’s also some evidence that coffee may help manage asthma and even control attacks when medication is unavailable, stop a headache, boost mood, and even prevent cavities.

And,

“There recently was a study from Brazil finding that children who drink coffee with milk each day are less likely to have depression than other children… In fact, no studies show that coffee in reasonable amounts is in any way harmful to children.”

And it’s benencifial for diabetics, too:

“Coffee is loaded with antioxidants, including a group of compounds called quinines that when administered to lab rats, increases their insulin sensitivity… Coffee has large amounts of antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid and tocopherols, and minerals such as magnesium. All these components have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.”

Hmmm, and itsn’t there some quinine use for treatment of malaria? Just askin’.

And, just laid your keys down and can’t recall where? Have trouble recalling a 10-digit phone number you’ve just heard? Drink more coffee!

…volunteers were shown a sequence of simple images (the letters A, B, C or D) and then asked if an image was the same as the one shown two images earlier. The volunteers were instructed to respond as quickly as possible using the right index finger for “yes” and the left index finger for “no.” The task was performed after a 12-hour period of no caffeine and a four-hour period of no nicotine exposure. Administration of 100 milligrams (mg) of caffeine (approximately the amount in two cups of coffee) as well as placebo was randomized across volunteers so that each of them underwent a caffeine and placebo scan. In the “caffeine condition,” the volunteers demonstrated a tendency towards improved short-term memory skills and reaction times during the task. The fMRI showed increased activity in brain regions located in the frontal lobe, where a part of the working memory network is located, and the anterior cingulum, the part of the brain that controls attention. In the “placebo condition,” the volunteers showed no change in activation patterns from the earlier test.2

And of course there’s more, but why belabor the issue when my Coffee Shrine is calling…

Monday, Monday… and Monday

Arose this A.M. to the sounds of more rain. OK, I like rain, but really. We’ve had enough, thank you. I see the animals are lining up two-by-two…(At least it’s cooler than normal.)

OK, so it’s raining. And… left my driver’s side window down last night. *sigh* So I get wet as I drive this A.M. So?

So… I go out to roll window up anyway and… the horn on my car’s blowing and will NOT shut off. *sigh* Pull battery cable, cos can’t find fuse puller and fingers too fat to pull fuse.

Drop cable nut.

It’s one of those days already.

Need. More. Coffee.

*heh*

[UPDATE: Of course, once I had early A.M. out of the way and could get back to third world county central, I was able to a.) Locate the cable nut, b.) determine that it was actually the switch in the steering column–shorted out from rain– and c.) detach the horn from the circuit then d.) connect the charger to the battery *sigh*, all in the continuing rain, of course. Car now starts and horn doesn’t “blow (although the tinny thing always did “blow”–*heh*), but now I need to get a hair dryer on my steering column to see if I can effect a “repair” that way, cos I really, really do NOT want to have to disassemble the steering column… All’s well, though. Lotsa stuff canceled cos I didn’t know how long the horn “repair” would take, so… twc central projects and “remote support” the rest of today.]

T-13; 2.03: Thirteen Health Benefits of… Coffee

Coffee, THE number one Holy Brew has a bad rap among the twittering masses. Here are a few of the many ways coffee is a blessing:

1.) Lowers risk of diabetes1

2.) Lowers risk of Parkinson’s1

3. Lowers risk of colon cancer1

4.) Mood enhancer1

5.) Headache treatment1 (“…a single dose of pain reliever such as Anacin or Excedrin contains up to 120 milligrams” of caffeine. *heh*)

6.) Useful as a paliative in Adult ADD/ADHD2 (medicating children out of their right minds is another issue entirely *sigh*).

7.) Some research indicates drinking coffee helps prevent dental caries3

8.) Helps in asthma management.1

9.) Enhances athletic performance. 4 (Of course, for me that means the ability to walk briskly to the network closet to reset a router… :-))

10.) Coffee with milk daily=less childhood depression.4 (But of course! Who wouldn’t have (had) a better childhood with a daily dose of The Holy Brew #1? *heh*)

11.) Oops. Left out lowers risk of breast, liver and rectal cancer.5

12.) With over four times the active anti-oxidants found in tea, coffee is better at providing the heart-health benefits often touted for that beverage.6

13.) Despite what you may have heard (even from so-called medical professionals) the evidence is that coffee does NOT cause elevated blood pressure and poses no risk for those who have high blood pressure.5. Oh, and coffee is no more diuretic than plain old everyday water.6

I could go on, but I think you get the point,

O Blessed, Holy Caffeine Tree!

O Blessed Holy Caffeine Tree

Go ahead; sing along. πŸ™‚

(This mp3 is a lower-sampling-rate version of trhe one at the Morning Coffee and Afternoon Tea link above.)

Oh, and here’s another verse, not included in the verses above:

O Blessed Holy Caffeine Tree,
In gratitude I sing of thee,
For all the ways you give life zest,
O Caffeine Tree, you are the best!

N.B.–The graphic above has a word-switch in the second verse that I need to get around to editing. First one to spot it gets two brownie points, redeemable for absolutely nothing but a pat on the back and a hearty “Attaboy/girl!”
